Hazing Black Bears
While the desired outcome is the same - to scare the animal away and restore its fear of humans - the methods are different.
Hazing a bear requires a more defensive approach.
The Goal: Show the bear you are the dominant force in the area without triggering a fight or flight response.
The Tools: Use loud noises, such as airhorns or banging pots and pans. You can throw pinecones or rocks at the ground near the bear. You should never throw food. When working or recreating in bear country, always carry bear spray and familiarize yourself with how to use it.
Crucial Rule: Never run. Stand your ground, make yourself look big, and back away slowly only after the bear has retreated.
